Used Car Test Drive Checklist

Inspect the Exterior

• Are there dents in the bodywork?
• Are the doors and panels the same colour? – Variations in colour indicate damage has been repaired.
• Are there any components hanging or loose underneath the car?
• Are there signs of rust on the underside or around the wheel arches?
• Are there pools of leaking fluids?
• Do tyres have signs of wear/damage? By law, tyres should have a minimum of 1.6mm tread depth.
• Are lights in working order? Check headlights and side lights, hazard lights, brake lights and indicators.
• Is the exhaust pipe supported correctly?
• What colour are the emissions from the exhaust pipe? Blue-coloured smoke can indicate oil-burning issues.

Check the Interior

Sit in the driver’s seat and get comfortable. Adjust your seat, the mirrors and the steering wheel to ensure the vehicle is the right fit for you. Ensure you know where relevant buttons and switches are located.

• Do all interior lights work? Dim lights could suggest an electrical issue.
• Do the windscreen wipers work? Remember to test the back and front.
• Does windscreen wash spray the windows properly?
• Does the radio/stereo system work?
• Does the air conditioning/heating work? Ensure air is emitted from all vents and listen out for strange noises.
• Do all doors lock when you lock the car?
• Do windows wind down smoothly?
• Do seatbelts work and retract correctly?
• Check the mileage. Is it feasible for the age of the car?
• Does the horn work?

Check Under The Bonnet

• Are oil and fluid tanks filled to the appropriate level?
• Does the engine look like it’s been kept in good condition?

Hit The Road

When you’re out on the open road, put the motor through its paces, listen for unusual noises and be sure you’re happy with how the vehicle handles.

• Does the engine start easily from cold?
• Do the gears clunk when you put it into gear?
• Are there any noises when you accelerate?
• Is the steering wheel steady as you drive?
• Do the brakes work? Brakes should feel firm and depress evenly and smoothly.
• Is the handbrake effective?
• Check the temperature gauge.

Returning to the Seller

Ask to see relevant paperwork:

• The logbook to see the service history
• MOT history and certificates
• V5C certificate

Make Your Decision

• Was the car comfortable to drive?
• Is the motor a good size for you and your family?
• Is the boot big enough?
