Keep Your Motor’s New Paintwork Looking Fresh

Car Paintwork High WycombeRecently had your vehicle resprayed? It’s looking pristine, but how do you get it to stay that way?

Cars are subjected to corrosive elements every day, making the upkeep of your stunning new paint job a real challenge. But never fear, by getting yourself into a maintenance routine, you can keep your motor looking its best.

Wash your motor regularly

It’s vital to wash any corrosive substances from the paintwork of your car as soon as possible. Bird droppings, splattered insects, tree sap, plants and fruits can lead to the corrosion of your paintwork if not cleaned ASAP.

Cleaning your car on a weekly basis can help avoid corrosion of your paintwork. Hand washing is preferable to ower washing, using a mild cleaning agent recommended for use on car paintwork, plus soft sponges and cloths.

Wax it up

Waxing your car will protect its paintwork, as it seals the top coat of paint. Twice a year is thought to be enough, particularly for cars kept in garages. Every 4 months is another suggestion, especially if your car is left outside to face the elements. To check whether the wax is still doing its job see if rain drips off the paintwork. If so, the wax is working to protect your paintwork from the elements, if not, it’s probably time for a touch-up.

Polish out scratches

For very light scratches you can use a polish that contains microfine abrasives. These gently clean the surface of the paint without causing damage.

For scratches that run a little deeper, it is best to have these removed by professionals, like the team here at Auto Medics. We repair paintwork and ensure colour matching for the make and model of your motor.

Does Your Motor Need A New Lick of Paint?

When you bring your motor to Auto Medics for a respray, we always ensure cars are thoroughly cleaned and prepared for all paint restoration jobs. If your cars looking a bit off colour, bring it down to our car repair body shop in High Wycombe and we’ll restore it to its former glory.

Clean your Car

In the meantime, it’s a pleasant day, head outside and give your motor a good clean, we are willing to bet it could do with it after a winter that hasn’t offered us much more than muddy walks, and especially if you have kids and/or a dog. Here are some top tips to ensure you avoid doing any damage.

Cleaning the exterior:

  • Only use a sponge you have reserved for car cleaning. Picking up any old sponge could spell trouble if there’s and grit caught up in it.
  • Avoid leaving your car to dry naturally, unless you’re a fan of the streaky watermark look. Use a chamois or microfibre cloth to dry off your car.
  • Rinse using a hose to remove most of the build-up of dirt and grit.
  • Work from the top to the bottom.
  • Use a brush or separate sponge and relevant cleaning product to clean your wheels.
  • A post-wash wax will give your car a cleaner finish, and make it easier to clean next time.
  • Avoid using a pressure washer, they can damage the paintwork of your car.

Tidying up the Interior:

  • Remove rubbish, shoes, clothes, toys, and anything else that doesn’t belong in your car.
  • Hose down your car mats to remove the bulk of the dirt, before cleaning with soapy water. Then leave to dry while you clean the rest of the inside.
  • Vacuum every nook and cranny.
  • Use a microfibre cloth and relevant cleaner to dust down your dashboard.
  • Find a relevant cleaner preferably with a brush head to scrub the carpet in the footwells.
  • Add a compulsory air freshener, one you can stand the smell of, to get your car smelling great again.

Ensure your Car is Ready for Summer

Car Bodywork Repair Experts in High WycombeSummer is here! So, it’s time to ensure your car is prepared for the warmer weather. As always, Auto Medics are here with the tips you need to maintain your motor.

Car Body Shop High Wycombe

As lockdown rules ease you might find yourself using your motor on a more regular basis. Here are some tips to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive as the summer heat continues.

  1. The sun’s rays can damage the paintwork of your car. Keeping your car waxed will act as your car’s very own sun screen, helping to protect it from the sun’s heat.
  2. Parking in a shady spot is recommended, particularly if you have leather seats.
  3. Ensure your cooling system is in working order especially throughout the summer months. Keep it topped up with coolant and water and ensure vents aren’t blocked to avoid your motor overheating.
  4. If you have concerns about your air conditioning system not working properly, get it checked out as it could be that it needs recharging. Air filters could also need replacing to ensure better air quality.
  5. After months of lockdown and reduced driving it’s a good time to get your battery checked. The hotter weather in summer months make your car battery work harder.
  6. Ensure you’ve replaced winter tyres with summer equivalents as these are better designed to grip roads at a hotter temperature.
  7. It’s also important to check your tyre pressure throughout summer. Temperature change can alter tyre pressure, so regular checks can help prevent tyres wearing unevenly leading them to become less fuel-efficient.
  8. Be sure to check oil levels frequently throughout summer as driving in warmer weather can take its toll on your engine.

How to Clean your Diamond Cut Alloys

diamond cut wheel refurbishment high wycombeAs experts in diamond cutting alloy wheels, Auto Medics are here to tell you that a diamond cut wheel needs different treatment to a standard alloy wheel. Once the diamond cutting process has been completed the wheel is lacquered. If the lacquer is damaged this can affect the look of the wheel and even cause corrosion.

Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels High Wycombe

Repairing diamond cut alloys isn’t an infinite solution. Diamond cutting can only be carried out a certain number of times to ensure the structural integrity of the wheel remains.

This is why it is important to look after your wheels once they have been diamond cut and your friendly diamond cutting wheel specialist in High Wycombe, Auto Medics are here to share their advice. It is vital to keep the lacquer intact to avoid damage to your wheels and this means using or avoiding certain products and processes to maintain the just out of the showroom shine diamond cut wheels offer.

Top Tips to keep your Diamond Cut Alloys in Tip Top Condition

  • Start by rinsing as much dirt from your wheel using a hose.
  • Avoid using snow foams with colouring agents as they can stain diamond cut wheels.
  • Spray the tyre wall with wheel cleaner and tackle the dirt with a stiff bristled tyre brush.
  • Only use a pH neutral or pH balanced wheel cleaner as acid or alkaline based cleaners can discolour the surface of your wheel.
  • Remove brake dust accumulation with a fallout remover. Once this has worked its magic be sure to thoroughly rinse.
  • Use a mild shampoo as they don’t contain harsh chemicals found in wheel shampoos.
  • Using a wheel brush dunk it in a bucket of the water/shampoo mix and clean between the spokes, inside the wheel and then across the face of the wheel. Working from top to bottom. Don’t press too hard! And once again be sure to rinse thoroughly.
  • Use a microfibre cloth or an air blower to dry the wheel.
  • Protect your wheels with a wheel wax or sealant to protect them from environmental factors. Buff with a microfibre cloth.

COVID-19 Lockdown: How to Keep your Motor Roadworthy

Car Body Repairs High WycombeAt Auto Medics, we are available to collect and return your vehicle if your motor requires essential body work repairs. This ensures you stay safe and follow the Governments recommendations during the COVID-19 lockdown while ensuring the upkeep of your motor.

Lockdown Car Body Repairs High Wycombe

If you are uncertain of the rules surrounding using your car during this period or worried about how to keep your motor roadworthy, Auto Medics are here to clarify.

You should only drive your car for the reasons specified by the Government, these instances are limited to:

  • Unavoidable travel to and from your workplace
  • Shopping for essentials
  • Medical purposes

COVID-19 Lockdown

This means that our cars could be left unused for an indefinite period of time, which can cause problems when it comes to needing to drive again. In order to keep your car roadworthy for essential trips the following tips should help you through lockdown:

  • Maintain your car battery:
    • Start it up once a week and let it run for approximately 15 minutes
    • This will help increase the battery’s charge as well as circulate oil and fuel around the engine.
    • Avoid turning your car on and off quickly as this can cause issues for the starter motor.
    • Never leave your car running unattended.
  • Maintain the brakes of your car
    • Left for a long period brake discs can start to corrode eventually leading to them seizing up and requiring the attention of a mechanic.
    • To avoid this roll your car back and forth a few metres now and again.
    • This will also help prevent your wheels developing flat spots and your hand brake from sticking.

If your car MOT is due during lockdown, you should also be aware that from 30 March 2020 a 6 month extension period has been granted.

When you next need to drive your car, if it’s been a while since you last did so be sure to check the following to ensure your car is safe and roadworthy:

  • Fluid levels including oil, engine coolant, brake fluid and screen wash.
  • Gently try your brakes when setting off
  • Check lights are all working
  • Check tyres have required tread and are appropriately inflated.
